Lanterns for Peace

Join us at this free, family friendly event to commemorate 74 years since the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. We remember those who lost their lives while envisioning a peaceful, nuclear-free future.

Lanterns for Peace features a peace song sing-a-along, refreshments, and a chance to decorate and float an illuminated lantern at dusk. If you are interested in volunteering, please email us at info@psrwisconsin.org. Get updates and let us know if you can come visiting our Facebook Event.

Great Lakes Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament Meeting

The first meeting of the Great Lakes Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament will be held Monday, August 5th at 1 pm at the Outrider office in Madison. Lunch will be provided.

Joe Scarry (United Church of Christ - Madeline Island) and David Combs ( Union of Concerned Scientists - Chicago) have organized this meeting to bring together representatives of the Midwestern states bordering Lake Michigan and Lake Superior to work together on nuclear disarmament, nuclear reactor abolition and related issues.

Peace Action of Wisconsin - Back from the Brink Call

Peace Action of Wisconsin is leading a conference call regarding Back from the Brink in Wisconsin. They are asking for local organizations endorse the Back from Break campaign and join Peace Action of Wisconsin in passing City and County Resolutions to endorse “Back form the Brink.”

The Conference Call will be on Thursday, July 18th at 7:00 pm.

Divest & Bring Us "Back from the Brink"

Presentation by Dr. Paula Rogge

Dr. Paula Rogge, a family physician and PSR WI member, will bring us up to speed on the Madison “Back from the Brink” Nuclear Disarmament-Divestment Resolution. It builds on the Nuclear Free Zone ordinance Madison passed in 1982, but “has teeth”.

Nuclear War and Disasters: Radiation Effects on Humans

Lecture by Dr. Monica Vohmann

Dr. Monica Vohmann will share information about the medical effects of nuclear radiation, using excerpts from Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor’s Story. Sachiko tells the true story of six-year-old Sachiko Yasui’s survival of the Nagasaki atomic bomb on August 9, 1945, and the heartbreaking and lifelong aftermath.

Ira Helfand, MD, Speaks in Madison

PSR's Dr. Ira Helfand visited Madison to speak about the medical and environmental consequences of a limited nuclear war in the Korean peninsula and the new Back from the Brink campaign to eliminate nuclear weapons. Dr. Helfand gave two lectures during his visit. He spoke to 20 medical students and health professionals at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and gave an evening talk in the community to approximately 55 people. Dr. Helfand also accompanied a Friends Committee for National Legislation (FCNL) Advocacy Team to a meeting with Senator Ron Johnson’s aide, Tom Petri.
