Divest & Bring Us "Back from the Brink"

Presentation by Dr. Paula Rogge

Dr. Paula Rogge, a family physician and PSR WI member, will bring us up to speed on the “Back from the Brink” Nuclear Disarmament-Divestment Resolution that Alder Marsha Rummel will be introducing to the Madison City Council in the next several months. It builds on the Nuclear Free Zone ordinance Madison passed in 1982, but “has teeth”.

The Resolution has been endorsed by PSR-Wisconsin, the Womens’ International League for Peace and Freedom, Progressive Dane, the Wisconsin Network for Peace, Justice and Sustainability, the Interfaith Peace Working Group, the Four Lakes Green Party and First Unitarian Social Justice Ministry.

Nuclear War and Disasters: Radiation Effects on Humans

Lecture by Dr. Monica Vohmann and Caren Stelson

Dr. Monica Vohmann will share information about the medical effects of nuclear radiation, using excerpts from Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor’s Story.

Sachiko tells the true story of six-year-old Sachiko Yasui’s survival of the Nagasaki atomic bomb on August 9, 1945, and the heartbreaking and lifelong aftermath.

"The Environment and Nuclear War: Making the Link" What Madison Can Do to Save our planet

Lecture by Robert Dodge, MD

Dr. Bob Dodge is the Co-Chair of the Security Committee of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) – USA and President of PSR - Los Angeles.  He successfully lobbied for the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and helped organize the US Back from the Brink campaign, which endorses the UN Treaty and calls for specific steps to lower the risk of nuclear war.  

His city of Ojai, California recently endorsed the Back from the Brink recommendations and committed to nuclear weapon-free contracts and investments.

Socially Responsible Investment: Individual and Institutional

Panel featuring Robert Dodge, MD, Vicki Elson, and Beth Norman

A panel discussion will discuss socially responsible investment and divesting in nuclear weaponry.

Dr. Dodge is a family physician practicing in Ventura, California. He is the Co-Chair of the Security Committee of PSR - USA and President of PSR - Los Angeles. Dr. Dodge successfully lobbied for the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2017 and helped organize the US “Back from the Brink” campaign.

His city of Ojai, California recently passed a resolution that supports the Back from the Brink recommendations and commits the city to nuclear weapon-free contracts and investments.

Vicki Elson is a co-founder of NuclearBan.US, which supports cities and states in aligning with the 2017 UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, with the ultimate goal of convincing the US and other nuclear armed nations to sign, ratify and implement the Treaty, thereby eliminating all nuclear weapons forever.

Her city of Northampton, Massachusetts just voted to align with the UN Treaty and divest in nuclear weapons.

Beth Norman is a financial advisor at RBC Wealth Management with extensive experience in socially responsible investment.

Ira Helfand, MD, Speaks in Madison

PSR's Dr. Ira Helfand visited Madison to speak about the medical and environmental consequences of a limited nuclear war in the Korean peninsula and the new Back from the Brink campaign to eliminate nuclear weapons. Dr. Helfand gave two lectures during his visit. He spoke to 20 medical students and health professionals at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and gave an evening talk in the community to approximately 55 people. Dr. Helfand also accompanied a Friends Committee for National Legislation (FCNL) Advocacy Team to a meeting with Senator Ron Johnson’s aide, Tom Petri.
